Fringe is the first tile collection designed by Michael Anastassiades for Mutina. Inspired by the ornamental fringe. Threads or strips that define an edge. The collection reinterprets this idea through a tactile porcelain surface engraved with parallel linear segments.
Each tile is divided into a sequence of raised and recessed lines in two distinct widths, creating pronounced grout joints that form a subtle brick-like rhythm. By simply rotating the tile, the linear segments can be woven into multiple layout patterns. The result is a series of seamless surface “carpets,” with or without borders, that naturally define and demarcate space while adapting to a wide range of environments.
Grout selection plays a critical role in the final aesthetic. A colored epoxy grout is recommended to ensure long-term color stability and resistance to wear. Depending on whether the grout is selected to match the tile or contrast with it, the surface’s visual effect can shift dramatically. This flexibility allows designers to emphasize linear texture, pattern definition, or overall surface continuity.

Fringe is produced in a single square format measuring approximately 5″ x 5″. The collection is available in two variants: Thin, featuring linear segments approximately 1/4″ wide, and Bold, with segments approximately 1/2″ inches wide. Both versions are designed to be modular with a recommended grout joint of approximately 1/4″, allowing for consistent pattern continuity across installations.
Each tile is offered in five refined colorways: White, Anthracite, Grey, Red, and Rose. Fringe is suitable for both wall and floor applications in residential and commercial settings, and can be used indoors and outdoors when installed according to project requirements.
Mutina Fringe is considered “LEED-friendly” because it has an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Health Product Declaration® (HPD), and contains recycled content. Each of these components can contribute to credit points in accordance with the LEED V4.1 rating system.
